- Movement – Use the left and right arrow keys to move Mario left and right. Press the up arrow while moving to jump.
- Enemies – Jump on top of enemies like Goombas and Koopa Troopas to defeat them. Don’t get hit by them.
- Power-Ups – Hit ? blocks to reveal helpful power-ups like Super Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, and Starman.
- Coins – Collect coins to earn lives and points. Coins are found in blocks or floating in the air.
- Bricks – Hit brick blocks from below to reveal coins, power-ups, or break the brick. Some contain hidden items.
- Pipes – Go down green pipes to travel between areas. Red/white pipeswarp you to bonus coin rooms.

- Time – Each stage has a 400 second time limit. Finish levels quickly to possibly earn 1-Ups.
- Secrets – Find hidden warp zones using invisible blocks to skip ahead. Look for ways to obtain more lives.
